Smart Vending Machines: Contactless Payments, Remote Monitoring and the Future of the Industry
We explain, with sources, how contactless payment and remote monitoring solutions improve vending operations.
For many years, traditional vending machines were viewed simply as machines that dispensed products. Today, smart vending machines offer a much more advanced structure across payment, stock monitoring, user experience and operations planning.
Why is cashless payment important?
Card and contactless payment options make the purchase process easier for the user. Reducing the need to carry cash can improve the user experience especially in plazas, hospitals, transport hubs and mixed-use living environments.
In NAMA's 2022-2023 industry census, around 75% of the 2.89 million machines reviewed were reported to accept cashless payment. The same figure was reported as 69% in 2018. Of the machines that accepted cashless payments, 94% supported bank or credit cards and 88% supported contactless payment.
These numbers apply to the market covered by NAMA's research and should not be treated as a universal global rate.
What does remote stock monitoring provide?
A machine's performance is not measured only by the number of sales. It also matters how quickly teams can see which product is running low, which machine needs restocking and which conditions may signal a technical issue.
Remote monitoring systems can reduce unplanned field visits, make restocking routes more efficient and support product availability.
Touchscreens and the digital experience
Smart screens can make product information easier to understand. In visually chosen categories such as flower vending, on-screen selection can make the experience more intuitive. In different product categories, campaign information, content or product explanations can also be presented through the digital interface.
Is technology enough by itself?
No. Smart systems strengthen operations, but they cannot compensate on their own for the wrong location or the wrong product selection. A successful model requires technology, location and field operations to be managed together.
